The first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s hotly anticipated (and closely guarded) Prometheus was released last week, and it tells us… that bad stuff happens. In outer space.

The trailer’s almost total lack of hints isn’t surprising, as Scott and movie studio Fox have kept the film strictly under wraps. However, the tagline that appears in the trailer- “They went looking for our beginning, what they found could be our end”- does fit in with earlier gossip. Over the summer, while shooting in Iceland, Scott said that he was filming “the beginning of time.”

Many fans are paying attention to the film’s title. In Greek mythology, Prometheus was a Titan who stole fire (often seen as a metaphor for divine inspiration) from the gods and gave it to mortals; but in retaliation, Zeus punished both Prometheus and Man. This could match up well with the story of a team of scientists searching for man’s creators, and getting more than they can handle.

Amazingly, Scott pioneered contemporary science fiction with movies like Alien and Blade Runner, but has not made a sci-fi film since. Early press described Prometheus as an Alien prequel, but more recently, Scott has said that the Alien franchise will just be a departure point for his ideas.

What do you think? Will Prometheus be a big hit in 2012?
