Jersey Shore Star Snooki Is Now A Boxing Promoter
We know what you’re thinking: “WTF?” We know because that’s exactly what we thought when we saw a headline on ESPN.com late last week indicating that Nicole Polizzi—or “Snooki” as she’s known on MTV’s hit reality TV show, Jersey Shore—is now a boxing promoter. We’ve seen Snooki throw a few punches on the show. We’ve seen her take a few of them, too. And, Lord knows she’s been the punchline of plenty of jokes over the course of the last couple years. But, promoting punching? You have got to be kidding.
Nonetheless, it’s true. Snooki and her dad Andy Polizzi are now the proud owners of Team Snooki Boxing, a promotional company that will book fights and work hard to promote a stable of fighters. They teamed up with another company called Final Round Promotions recently and they’ve already booked their first bill—a January 28 fight that’s set to take place at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. They’ll be charging $9.95 for the fight and streaming it live over the overnight.
It’s a bit of a strange business move for Snooki. After all, she doesn’t exactly seem like the biggest boxing fan in the world (she repeatedly referenced the movie franchise, Rocky, during a press conference last Thursday), and it doesn’t sound like she’ll be getting a whole lot out of this by doing it. So, why bother at all? Well, from the sound of it, it’s something that her and her dad can do together—and she’s all about helping him to realize his dream now that she’s made millions of dollars off all the fame she got as a result of appearing on Jersey Shore.
“Helping out my dad is No. 1,” she said at the press conference. “Me and my dad are like best friends. I’m a daddy’s girl.”
That’s sweet and all. But, we still have to believe that this boxing promo company isn’t going to last. After all, Snooki has no prior experience. She doesn’t have many great fighters in her corner (currently, she only has a trio of brothers at her disposal), and the boxing underworld can be very seedy. So while we certainly wish her the best of luck—if for no other reason than that we want to see her dad enjoy himself after having to sit through four whole seasons of Jersey Shore so far—we don’t see Snooki turning into the next Bob Arum or Don King anytime soon. Sorry, Snooks, but we’ve gotta agree with everyone else by saying, “WTF?” This sounds like one of the stranger ideas we’ve heard so far this year.
