Now this is comical. Reportedly, a previously unnamed species of horse fly has been named after Beyoncé because the golden hair on the insect’s bottom makes it the “all time diva of flies.” Called the Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae fly, the insect is typically found in Australia’s far north Queensland and was first collected by scientists in 1981, which coincidentally is the year Beyoncé was born. According to Bryan Lessard of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO):

“It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly’s abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyonce.”

The decision to name the species after the music superstar was also an attempt “to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species,” according to Lessard.

Just what every glamorous diva wants…a nasty ass horse fly named after them.
