Before Kanye West was famous, he was still the same cocky, braggadocios rapper we have come to know and, er, “love” today.

In 2004, the then 27-year-old had already made a name for himself whilst producing notable tracks on Jay-Z’s 2001 album, The Blueprint. But he still had none of the fame. So to drum up some buzz for his debut album, The College Dropout, Kanye dropped by HBO‘s Def Poetry Jam to spit some hot fire.

Introduced by host Mos Def as “the future of hip-hop,” Kanye quickly makes a few huge claims of his own once onstage. “This morning I spent a lot of time, like, trying to pick out my outfit ’cause I’m just really into clothes,” Kanye told the crowd while showing off the price tag still attached to his adidas sneakers. “I’m going to be the best dressed rapper in the game.” And although the crowd bursts into laughter, just 7 years later he would have a clothing line all his own.

Check out Kanye show off his spoken-word skills in the clip below. He performs a piece called “Self Conscious,” which later turned into his hit “All Falls Down.” Even back then, he was all G.O.O.D.
