Warner Bros. released publicity stills from the upcoming film Dark Shadows, and the upcoming vampire film is definitely staking out very different territory than the current Twilight blood suckers. The photos (above and below) showcase Johnny Depp in all his freakish glory as the centuries-old vampire Barnabas Collins.

Gone are the scruffy, handsome vampires of Stephenie Meyer’s insanely popular series: Depp looks more like a nerdy, hermit version of the Dracula we all know and love. (Although, I have to wonder if Michelle Pfeiffer is the immortal one, as she looks as gorgeous as ever.) The photos also offer a further glimpse of visionary director Tim Burton‘s design, which promises to be as stylized, dark, and whimsical as in Sweeney Todd or Alice in Wonderland.

Dark Shadows is based on a cult favorite “gothic soap opera” from the 60s and 70s. It is slated for release in May.
