Jon Stewart Rips Newt Gingrich For Debate Answer
Jon Stewart gave an even more impassioned performance than usual on The Daily Show on Monday night, reacting to Newt Gingrich‘s shocking double digit victory in the South Carolina primary. His main gripe was with the pugnacious debate performance (really, just the first five minutes) that seemed to propel Gingrich to a massive lead:
(Anybody else think Stewart’s impression of a befuddled John King was the best part?)
Though Stewart might have dwelt a little too long on the easy target of Gingrich’s messy personal life, he did bitingly note that Gingrich didn’t have a problem with the news media making presidential sex lives a major issue when Bill Clinton was around; and of course, many have criticized the inherent hypocrisy of Gingrich publicly making “Christian family values” and “the sanctity of marriage” platforms of his campaign.
But Stewart also moved on to more obviously public matters, mocking Gingrich’s attempts to model himself as a Washington outsider after decades as a Congressman, House Speaker, and Washington “consultant.”
Finally, Stewart deftly summed up the Republican infighting over the current two leading candidates: “You’re all right. They’re both terrible.”
