Check Out Jean Paul Gaultier’s Controversial Amy Winehouse-Inspired Collection

It’s only been six months since Amy Winehouse‘s “death by misadventure” robbed the world of an icon at the young age of 27. But her memory continues to inspire.

A few days ago, Jean Paul Gaultier channeled Amy Winehouse’s image and likeness for his 2012 Haute Couture Collection during Spring Paris Fashion Week. The fashion designer sent a bevy of models down the runway with bee-hives, heavy black eyeliner, and covered in Amy-inspired garb. Some even strutted their stuff while holding cigarettes as Amy’s music played in the background. Too much too soon? Jean Paul doesn’t think so.

“Amy Winehouse was a true style icon,” Jean Paul said backstage of his “tribute” to Amy.  “What she stands for, above all, is uniqueness. Both in music and the way she dressed, she mixed a great many influences to create her style. It was great. It is very joyous.”

But not everyone found joy in watching a bunch of Amy Winehouse look-a-likes sashay in what some considered an ill-advised fashion collection. Mitch Winehouse, the father of the late singer, released a statement to The Sun condemning the collection.

“The family was upset to see those pictures, they were a total shock,” he said. “We’re still grieving for her loss, and we’ve had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorizes some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”

Amy’s close friend Kelly Osbourne supported Mitch’s sentiments and tweeted, “Although @JPGaultier was paying homage to my dear friend & icon to the world I found it to be lucratively selfish and distasteful!”

Mitch also expressed anger at the fact that Gaultier had not promised to donate some of the profits to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which helps drug and alcohol-addicted youth in the UK. Check out Jean Paul Gaultier’s entire collection below. Do you find it delicious or distasteful?
