So You Think You Can Dance Choreographer Alex Da Silva Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison for Rape
It’s crazy to think that this is the face of a rapist. Yes, I can hear my mother’s voice now as she tells me that looks can be deceiving and that I should never trust anyone. But, for some reason, I find this news extremely shocking and disturbing.
Alex Da Silva, a once-famed choreographer on the FOX hit, So You Think You Can Dance, was just sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape of a 22-year-old female dance student and the assault of another woman following his arrest in 2009. Unable to post the $2 million dollar bail, Da Silva has been in prison ever since and thus absent from SYTYCD since season four.
In September 2011, the 43-year-old Salsa instructor was convicted of one count of rape and one count of assault. The victim was a 25-year-old protege. Da Silva was also charged with four other counts of rape allegedly occurring between 2003 and 2009 but the jury was deadlocked on those charges and they were eventually dismissed. Da Silva allegedly lured women to his home with the promise of private one-on-one lessons and then raped them. In 2009, after his initial arrest, Da Silva vehemently denied all charges.
“I know the truth, and I don’t even know who the others are,” he told SalsaFreak.com. “It’s all a bunch of lies, and people just want to bring me down. If something like that really happened, then they should have gone to the police that night, or the same day, but it was never that way. I have too much to lose. I don’t need that type of thing in my life.”
Da Silva will now have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. During sentencing, L.A. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy stated that Da Silva “does not respect women” and “believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants when he wants.”
