JC Penney Under Fire ‘Cause Spokesperson Ellen Is A Lesbian

Members of conservative group One Million Moms (part of the American Family Association) have their claws out for openly gay talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her new ambassador role with JC Penney.

Stating DeGeneres is not “neutral in the culture war” (whatever that means) the group is asking supporters to call their local J.C. Penney to complain about the hiring of DeGeneres. “Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families,” the group said in a released statement. “More sales will be lost than gained unless they replace their spokesperson quickly.”

The stores hired Ellen as part of their new “Fair & Square” campaign” and immediately supported her via a quick blast to new service Reuters: “jcpenney stands by its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres.”

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has launched a “Stand Up For Ellen” website urging fans to sign a petition and inform their Penney’s stores they made the right decision, a petition with over 35,000 signatures already.

We can all agree that Ellen DeGeneres is funny and very smart…

That said, spokesperson for J.C Penney…?

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to explain Ellens sexual preference to my kids everytime we go to the store.. and I don’t want explain to my neice and nephew – or any other child that is young and impressionable.

The day she becomes spokeperson is the day we quite going to J.C Penney – simple.

It is comments like the one above that I just don’t understand. Why would you have to explain Ellen’s sexual preference every time you go to the store. It’s not like there is going to be a sign hanging above her that says “I am gay”. Do you have to explain other spoke person’s sexual orientation…no, I don’t think you do. Also, it’s keeping our kids in the dark and not letting them know that everyone is different and that is ok that is causing the bulling and discrimination in this world. You don’t have to like it, but please don’t discriminate and please don’t teach your children to hate.

I have been a JC Penney shopper for many years. Penneys has always represented the family & family values. I’m not sure where Penneys is going with Ellen as a spokesperson but Ellen does not represent the family. So because of this, I will no longer shop at Penneys. I will go to Kohl’s for my future purchases. I am very dissappointed in your decision.

  • Tina Conrad says:

Wow. I didn’t know there were so many racist JCP shoppers. Pathetic.

So explain to me why the world is in such a terrible way. Because with people who have views like those of one million moms. having views like prejudice, ignorant and hatred are not values that I want my children to embrace. Ellen is a very good, honest, hard working, funny and loving human being. Those are the values I want my children to have. And yes I have children and no I’m not gay. So one million mothers just stick to being moms.

  • Diana Radabaugh says:

Kathleen so it is ok for you to have your little girl have sexally intercourse with other little girls?

  • Diana Radabaugh says:

NO JC Pennys for me. They have a right to have who they want to represent them and I have a right to shop where my self and family is represented.

  • Lara Leigh says:

I am your family doctor, your family lawyer, your child’s hairstylist, your family dentist, your child’s teacher, your child’s coach, the day care director, the choir/ band director… I am gay. I am everywhere… your children know me and love me for how I contribute to their life and development. You know me. You probably respect me as a role model for you child already, but I doubt you even know I am gay…and I really doubt you ever have to explain my sexual orientation to your child. My sexual orientation is not relevant to the value of life, kindness, health, art, music, sport, science, literature, etc. that I help create in your family’s life — and Ellen’s sexual orientation is not relevant to the celebrity and fashion appeal that she brings to JCPenney as a clothes model.

I have shopped at JC penny for over 25 years. I dont’ hate anyone. Not happy a gay lifestyle is being promoted at a traditional family store. You can’t go anywhere anymore without the adgenda in your face. I also am very unhappy with the other changes to the store. No more sales. :( and let’s be gay.
No thanks. I’ll be going elsewhere.

  • Michelle says:

Diana Radabaugh: Your inquiry of little girls having sexual intercourse with other little girls is quite appalling. Sexual intercourse is for adults. Consenting adults, male or female. In any combination one chooses. In fact the US Supreme Court made that clear in Lawrence V Texas in 2003, making same-sex sexual activity LEGAL in every state and territory of the nation. In fact, just today the courts also ruled that Prop 8 was illegal and Gay Marriage cannot be banned in California. Have a nice day!

  • Christie says:

Diana Radabaugh, I suppose you’re ok with your little girl having sexual intercourse with little boys, as long as it’s a boy? Get real.

I’m going to buy twice as much from JC Penny just to spite you bigots. You’re not doing your kids any favors teaching them to be so intolerant and hateful.

  • Jay T says:

After many many years of shopping at Penny’s will cancel our account and will no longer shop at Penny’s

  • kelcy says:

Lara Leigh: Get real! You are less the 2% of the world’s population, that’s hardly everywhere. Check out what gays are really like:

Searched every store on Rockville Pike in Maryland looking for a new best friend: A couch. The last place I expected find one? JC Penney’s. Still got it, and we’re still in love.

Wanted a solid-color, cotton only sweater from Santa this year. No blends. And definitely no wool! Santa said that after an exhausted search of Paramus, New Jersey’s many malls, she found it at JC Penney.

Now, JC Penney’s is telling One Million Moms and their conservative views to take a hike.

Next time I need to go shopping, I think I’ll go out of the way and take public transit from DC up to Rockville, MD and shop JC Penney’s FIRST.

  • Chelle says:

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how hateful and closed minded it may be, I applaud JC Penny and their decision to not back down due to the backlash by” a million moms”. If those “moms” spent more time ” mothering” and taking care of their own house instead of pushing hate and prejudice the world would be a much kinder place. That said, remember the founding fathers that signed the declaration and made it a priority that you could spew your opinion were wearing FABULOUS wigs and tights at the time!

  • Lisa Niicholas says:

JCP and Ellen you have the full support of my heterosexual family. I will go out of my way to shop at stores that respect all of humanity. It’s no surprise we have had increased bullying when we have adults attacking other people because they are “different”. One Million Moms, I respect that you are trying to make positive changes in the world, but really, there are so many truly offensive and degradng examples that you could be fighting against.

  • Bill says:

Way to go Ellen sick and tire of the Bigotry out there trying to tell everyone what to do.!!! Take care of your own business and don’t worry about everyone else !!!!! Never shop at JC Penny but will now!!!!
