Ryan Reynolds has done what no other man on the planet has. He has punched Denzel Washington and lived to tell the tale.

The two actors were in South Africa filming their upcoming action thriller , Safe House, when Ryan connected with something “tall, dark, and expensive” during a high octane car chase.

“We’re having a pretty intense fight scene in the car and we’re all over the place,” Ryan told the BBC Breakfast. “And I felt my head connect with something tall, dark, and expensive. It was pretty awful.”

Despite the snafu, the 35-year-old actor was thrilled to work with the living legend. “I’d met him once before at an event a few years earlier,” he recalled. “You definitely want to know your stuff when you come in. I think for any actor, young or old, you’d be excited to work with him. He’s like a living, breathing master class in acting.”

And, how has the living legend responded to being punched by a young whippersnapper? Like a champ, of course. “I’ve never had a black eye in my life!” Denzel, 57, told reporters in South Africa. “There’s a scene where I reach over to try to choke him while I have handcuffs on. We were flying around in the car. It just happened that as I was reaching forward, he was flying back… and POW.”

During the press conference, Reynolds quipped, “I’m glad I was your first. If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian.”

Check out the trailer from the already-infamous flick below. Will you check out Safe House when it hits theaters today?
