Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter– First Trailer

The first trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter landed yesterday, giving us a peek at this very fictional account of the sixteenth president. And it looks like… it might not suck?

When plans for the movie were announced, I was skeptical. It’s based on a book that itself was a late entry in an already worn out genre: the horror/classic literature mashup that was started by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. That book used zombies quite cleverly as a metaphor for all subtext and all the horrors that go barely mentioned among the English nobility in such classic novels. But the unexpected success of that book spawned a wave including Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Android Karenina, Jane Slayre, and Little Women and Werewolves. And now the movie seems like a late entry in the vampire craze.

But this trailer doesn’t seem gimmicky at all. In fact, it looks dark, moody, and pretty sweet. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is the only other adaptation written by original PPZ scribe Seth Grahame-Smith, so its fantasy elements might have some real depth. The film certainly has strong credentials in the form of producer Tim Burton and visually impressive Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov. Also, I’m a sucker for the Johnny Cash narration.

In addition, star Benjamin Walker looks like he kicks some serious ass as the famous Rail Splitter (Stake Driver?). Walker might be the only leading man to build a career on playing action hero reinventions of American presidents: last year, he originated the role of an emo rockstar Andrew Jackson in Broadway’s Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.

Full disclosure: I once worked on a play Walker was in, and am biased knowing that he is awesome.

What do you think? Is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter a must-see?
