Did Madonna Deserve The #1 Spot On VH1′s “100 Greatest Women In Music” List?

Although the country is still lost in the lingering fog of legendary singer Whitney Houston‘s passing, VH1 has quietly unveiled their “100 Greatest Women In Music” list. The countdown, which began on Monday and ends Friday, featured a number of heavy hitters including Lauryn Hill (#50), Queen Latifah (#34), Amy Winehouse (#26), Alicia Keys (#14), Britney Spears (#11) and Janet Jackson (#7). But it is Madonna perched on the top spot as the greatest woman in music. Her career has spanned three decades and has seen her sell over 300 million albums worldwide; which also makes her the world’s top-selling female recording artist of all time, according to the Guinness World Records. The fact that she has never been out of the game for longer than three years proves her worth as the 53-year-old is still going strong. Some might argue that Mariah Carey (#2), Beyonce (#3) or Whitney Houston (#6) could have claimed the top spot, but Madonna has sold records for as long as Beyonce has been alive. Although Whitney Houston will go down as one of the — if not the — greatest voice in music, her troubled life and hiatus (fairly or unfairly) pushed her down the list. Mariah Carey’s voice is epic, but Madonna has sold 300 million albums and has laid down the template for artists ranging from Lady Gaga to Nicki Minaj to try and recreate with their musical theatrics.

And just think, Madonna isn’t done yet. Check out the rest of the list below.
