Patrick Ewing’s Sneaker Company Is Making A Comeback Soon
Ewing back! That’s right. Although Patrick Ewing has been sitting on the NBA sidelines as a coach, rather than a player, for quite some time now, Ewing Athletics—the sneaker/athletic wear company that Ewing founded back in the late 1980s—is preparing to make some sort of comeback this summer. We know that because yesterday the Ewing Athletics Twitter page posted a picture of a bunch of plastic basketball keychains stamped with Ewing’s signature and his jersey number 33 and boldy proclaimed, “Ewing back!” But, what in the world are they bringing “back”?
Well, we have absolutely no idea. All they’ve said thus far is that they’re making a comeback—and that they’re making it sometime next summer. However, if we had to guess, we’d say that they’re probably either going to be producing some type of affordable sneaker or putting out a bunch of streetwear—or possibly doing both. Back in his playing days, Ewing wasn’t exactly the hippest dude on the block. But ever since he’s retired, a handful of companies like UNDRCRWN have immortalized Ewing by putting him on the front of T-shirts and giving him a bit of a cult following. So Ewing Athletics might also want to consider going that route.
Either way, we love the idea of Patrick Ewing re-opening Ewing Athletics and trying to make it cool in the current market. While tons of basketball players have their own signature sneakers and clothing lines now, Ewing was actually one of the originators of athletes starting their own companies. After leaving adidas back in 1998, he became the first NBA player to create his own sneaker brand. So there’s some history here that Ewing Athletics can teach people about the sneaker game. It’ll also be good to (hopefully!) see Ewing doing something other than just sitting on the sidelines. You picked the right time to make a comeback, Patrick. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us this summer.
