UFC President Dana White Calls Mayweather “Racist” For Jeremy Lin Tweets
The rise of Jeremy Lin continues to bring attention to a society that is coming to grips with the fact that race is still an issue in this country. The recent firing of an ESPN writer for the “Chink in the Armor” headline is proof that we are still a sensitive society that forgets how words can offend. The latest conflict over Jeremy Lin’s racial background just so happened to be between pound-for-pound boxing champ Floyd Mayweather and UFC President Dana White.
Not too long ago, Mayweather took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the attention that Jeremy Lin was receiving as the story line nobody saw coming in the NBA this season.
“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,” Mayweather tweeted on February 13. The comments caused an uproar on the internet as most thought they were racially insensitive and uncalled for. As soon as the story hit ESPN, Mayweather attempted to clarify his remarks and defend himself.
“It’s okay for ESPN to give their opinion but I say something and everyone questions Floyd Mayweather. I’m speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up,” he said. “Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized.”
The comments struck a nerve with UFC president Dana White who opened a verbal can of whoop ass on the undefeated boxer.
“First of all, what [Mayweather] said, I think, is racist. He’s made a couple of racist comments. And yes, Floyd, you’re racist with the stuff that you’ve said,” White said in an interview with Fuel TV. “And you say African-Americans don’t get [praise]? Really? Kobe Bryant doesn’t get any praise? Michael Jordan never got any praise? The list goes on and on of guys who completely get praised for being great NBA basketball players. Not only can [Lin] compete and make it in the NBA, the guy is tearing it up and is breaking records, you knucklehead.”
White’s comments drew the ire of Mayweather’s adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, who advised White to “shut the f*ck up and mind his own business.”
Although White may have a point, one doesn’t have to look too far into his past to see an indiscretion he had along similar lines. White dropped an anti-gay slur back in 2009 when he verbally attacked then-Sherdog.com writer Loretta Hunt for a story she wrote. White was criticized by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and subsequently apologized.
Is White right or is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

“we are still a sensitive society that forgets how words can offend”
“Is White right or is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black?”
All of this is a case of political correctness gone mad. Not that there’s a sane version of it but it’s all gone way too far. The difference between how actual real people talk with each other in private and what is allowed to say in public is staggering. It’s a total disconnect from reality for the sake of a fake sterilized feel good lefty hippy trip. It is absolutely disgusting that people are being persecuted for the words they speak. Nobody should every be punished for stating their opinion. What’s this world come through? The thought police is running wild.
