George Costanza Responds To Mitt Romney
At Wednesday night’s Republican debate, Mitt Romney (attempted) to quote Seinfeld character George Costanza. And yesterday, the actor who played Costanza on the NBC hit series, Jason Alexander, responded with some biting criticism of the former Massachusetts governor, highlighting the identity problem Romney has faced the entire campaign.
Romney’s self-introduction at the debate was interrupted by applause. Romney then remarked, “As George Costanza would say, when they’re applauding, stop.”
According to the Huffington Post, Romney has made the joke before, at a debate on Dec. 7 and at a town hall in South Carolina.
Romney didn’t quite get it right. The actual line is spoken by Jerry (to George), and goes: “When you hit that high note, you say goodnight and walk off.” George then spends much of the episode figuring out how to end his business meetings on “that high note.”
But Romney had more to worry about than a misquotation. Alexander tweeted a response:
“Thrilled Gov. Romney enjoys my old character. I enjoyed the character he used 2 b 2. If he’d embrace that again, he’d b a great candidate.”
Ouch. Certainly, Jason Alexander isn’t a very influential political voice in the country, but Romney doesn’t need any additional accusations that he is not “genuine.” It’s another gaffe for a man who doesn’t seem to do anything that isn’t thoroughly planned out. Maybe Romney will need another George line: “SERENITY NOW!”

I don’t see this as being a very politically determing encounter, but you obviously see this as a turning point in the election.
