The Los Angeles Lakers Need Rajon Rondo
The Boston Celtics have officially put Rajon Rondo on the trading block and the Los Angeles Lakers must do whatever it takes to land him.
No, Rajon Rondo still doesn’t have much of a perimeter game and it is almost definite that the Lakers would have to give up Andrew Bynum or Pau Gasol to get him, but if the Lakers want to shake things up and give themselves a chance in the West, they must acquire him.
Kobe Bryant may be averaging 28.5 points per game to lead the Lakers (and the NBA) in scoring, but as the season begins to wind down to the final stretch, somebody is going to need to take some of the ball handling pressure off of him. Right now the Lakers deploy a series of point guards that are arguably the most ineffective in the league. 37-year-old Derek Fisher is starting for this team and averaging a paltry 5 points and 3 assists. His backup, Steve Blake, isn’t much better, averaging just under 7 points and 3 assists. Teams in the Western Conference are abusing the hapless backcourt on both ends of the floor. It also doesn’t help when your leading scorer is also leading the team in assists, as Kobe averages 5 per game.
Adding Rondo would be an immediate boost to the Lakers backcourt. The 26-year-old’s athleticism and all around game would create a formidable backcourt with Kobe Bryant. He can play defense and handle the ball, and his 9.6 assists a game would help the Lakers tremendously. Yes, they will be giving up some size in order to acquire him, but Rondo is exactly what the Lakers need at this point in time. Although the Lakers are only a half a game out in the Pacific Division, they need to do something if they plan on competing in the playoffs this season. With guards like Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, and Tony Parker presenting matchup problems come playoff time, getting Rondo would level the playing field.
You can argue about his free throw shooting and jump shot, but if it wasn’t for Rondo, the Celtics possibly wouldn’t have a championship ring. It’s no secret that the Lakers have been after an elite point guard and if Rondo is on the market, they need to do whatever it takes to get him.
