Is Jay-Z’s Favorite New Luxury Ride A Conversion Van?

It used to be you weren’t officially a “baller” if you didn’t drive a Bentley. Rappers kept them in their garages. Basketball players pulled them out for big games. And the rest of us sat by in our two-door Hondas and POS station wagons just wishing we could buy a Flying Spur one day.

But, a funny thing has happened: A car that “ballers” wouldn’t be caught dead in just a short time ago has now become a symbol of wealth and prosperity. That’s right, we’re talking about the conversion van. Once reserved for roadies, hippies, and those with a gang of kids, the conversion van is suddenly all the rage in celebrity circles.

In particular, the Mercedes Sprinter—or the SP5 Conference as it’s sometimes called—has become the car of choice for celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce who’ve been spotted driving around with little Blue Ivy Carter in this thing. Sprinters like the one below, which has been customized by German tuner HARTMANN, features tons of leather and wood-grain paneling, swiveling seats, plenty of legroom, a pantry with wooden cupboards, a foldable table, and even an espresso maker. You know, just in case you’re cruising along and need a little pick-me-up. And, the best part of all? The entire design of this particular van is inspired by President Obama‘s Air Force One plane. That equates to one of the flyest rides we’ve seen this year, despite the fact that it’s a conversion van!

So, yeah. If you’re a baller—or you just plan on acting like one—we suggest getting yourself behind the wheel of one of these. As for the rest of us? Well, we’ll be at the used car lot test-driving all the Bentleys that are suddenly out of style with celebrities. Conversion vans are the way to go now if you’re a baller. Who saw that coming?
