The New York Auto Show is this week, and much of the buzz has been about technology a century in the making: flying cars. While prototypes have existed before, and while the vehicles of The Jetsons are still far off, this year’s models offer groundbreaking progress.

Dutch company PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle) released video of a successful test flight and drive, showing a sleek machine that resembles a small helicopter:

Meanwhile, American company Terrafugia first sent their airplane-like Transition vehicle airborne back in 2009. But they brought the prototype to New York, so people could see first-hand what the company calls “the first street legal airplane.”

What do you think? Will flying cars soon be a part of everyday life?
