Need $200? The State Of Maryland Is Paying Big Bucks For Dead Snakehead Fish

Two hundred dollars is a lot of money. It could help you pay your rent. It could get you a couple week’s worth of groceries. Hell, it could have been used to buy a pair of “Galaxy” Nike Foamposites, which you could have turned around and sold for two thousand dollars! Especially in these trying economic times, $200 can literally be the difference between having a roof over your head and not having a roof over your head. Which is why we fully encourage you to grab a fishing pole and get to Maryland. Not now, but right now. Because, if you do, you could make 200 bucks—or more.

Now, at this point, you’re probably wondering WTF we’re talking about. And we don’t blame you. How are you going to make $200 in Maryland right now? It’s not like they’re giving away jobs. Except, in a way, they are. You see, the state is having a bit of a problem with snakehead fish, a fish that originated from Africa and is also known as the “fish from hell.” It seems these fish have slowly migrated to Maryland—first to small ponds and now to the Potomac River—and the state wants to eradicate them because they’re eating up a lot of the local fish populations. They’re also incredibly hard to get rid of, because they can live on land for up to four days and they’ve got teeth that are so sharp that they can bite through a steel-toe boot.

So, here’s the deal: Maryland will give you one $200 gift card to Bass Pro Shops for every single snakehead fish that you catch and kill. According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Inland Fisheries, all you need to do is catch a snakehead fish, kill it, and then upload a picture of you with the dead fish to the DNR’s Angler’s Log web site. Then, you’ll get your $200 gift card, which you can then use or sell for the $200 value. It’s as simple as that.

Of course, we should warn you that snakehead fish are a particularly feisty type of fish. We’ve already pointed out that they can bite through a boot and we should also note that one fisherman in Maryland had to use a gun to kill all of the snakehead fish that he’s caught so far. But, if you’ve got the wherewithal—and the time—to do it, $200 is a handy reward for doing something as simple as fishing, right? See you by the water!
