The 10 Most Racist Hunger Games Tweets

Sigh. Things like this just show that this country still has a lot of work to do when it comes to race relations. Recently, a whole bunch of people who saw the new movie, Hunger Games, were very surprised that Rue, Thresh, and Cinna were black in the movie. And they took to their Twitter accounts to express their disgust.

We could see fans of the movie being disappointed if the characters listed above were described as pale-skinned individuals in the book and they turned out to be black in the movie. But, that’s not what happened. In actuality, Rue is described like this in the book: “She has bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin.” Likewise, Thresh’s skin color is also explained. “The boy tribute from District 11, Thresh, has the same dark skin as Rue.” And while Cinna’s race is never defined, how can anyone doubt Lenny Kravitz‘s appeal?

Nonetheless, the tweets just seemed to get more and more racist as the movie grew in popularity. Take a look for yourself and check out the 10 most racist Hunger Games tweets.

from what ive heard…. most characters in hunger games are brown in the book…. aint like anyone’s complaining how they used Caucasian actors to play those roles… ignorant people smh
Maybe it’s just me but when I read “She has bright, dark eyes and satiny brown skin.” Somehow, I picture a person of African, or the very least, Arabic descent but overall someone that is NOT Caucasian.
Honestly, that is just horrible that people could be so racist! In the book it depicts her as African American. If you have a problem with this statement, ask Suzanne Collins herself! By the way, even if she never intended Rue to be African American, she obviously thought it was okay to have this girl play her!
Also, everyone has their own image in mind for the characters, its not like the director can read your minds. In addition to this, if you don’t want the director to “get it wrong” how about you just not go and see it if it bothers you that much. We are all humans here, okay? Would you rather them make no movie at all? By the way they released info about the actors who were playing the characters like a year before the actual movie so really why are you getting all angry now?
We are sick and tired of hollywood stereotyping blonds as the villians. Jews got a bad rap, then the Germans. Blonds can be nice people and we’ve met some who have to see their shrinks growing up with shitty shows that keep stereotyping them as the bad guys. Grow up! Let’s do better – multicultural, America!
AntiBlond Racism is OVER or at least it should have been centuries ago.
