Think Like A Man Knocks Hunger Games Out Of Top Spot At Box Office

Hollywood was surprised this week by the unexpectedly strong debut of rom-com Think Like A Man, which unseated The Hunger Games after that film’s impressive four weeks in the number one spot.

Produced for just $13 million, Think Like A Man has already brought in $33 million. (At least one critic who even predicted that the film would be number one, still thought it would only gross $19 million.)

Also surprising is that such a successful film was marketed to such a narrow niche, being sold mainly to the African-American community. Based on the stand-up and popular advice book of Steve Harvey, Think Like A Man was targeted to black audiences “via appearances on Harvey’s morning show, screenings at historically black universities, and special promotions on networks like BET”, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Not everyone was surprised though: Dr. Jay’s own Simone “Boss Lady” Amelia called the film a “winner” earlier this month.

And don’t be too worried about The Hunger Games: Katniss still raked in $14.5 million, pushing it to a domestic total of $356.9 million.

Did you see Think Like A Man? What did you think?
