Will We Ever See Jon Jones Vs. Anderson Silva?
24-year-old Jon Jones has done it again. Not only did he beat his former friend and training partner Rashad Evans to retain his UFC light heavyweight championship, he once again made it look easy. Since making his UFC debut back in 2008, Jones has been unstoppable in the Octagon. He’s 9-1 (his lone loss was a DQ to Matt Hamill in a fight he was well on his way to winning) and hasn’t even come close to losing. Most thought that his former training partner had the remedy for “Bones” Jones’ supremacy, but that wasn’t the case as Jones tore down his fourth former world champion in a row. With the gap between Jones and the rest of the division growing to exponential proportions fight after fight, you have to wonder if anybody in the UFC can beat Jones.
Of course, the first name that comes up is Anderson Silva.
Silva is perhaps the only other fighter that is quickly running out of opponents. Should Silva dispatch of Chael Sonnen this summer, the murmurs may turn to full blown roars of people wanting to see these two clash in the cage. But what about Georges St-Pierre, you ask? Well, GSP is coming off an injury and has Carlos Condit to deal with first. Not to mention that St-Pierre may never, ever go from welterweight to 185 lbs to meet Silva. Jon Jones and Anderson Silva are similar in many ways with just enough disparities between their fighting styles that would make it a remarkable matchup.
However, chances are that this fight never happens.
For one, Silva has been quite vocal about remaining at 185 lbs for the rest of his career. And the rest of his career may not last much longer. At the age of 37, Silva is certainly no spring chicken. Putting him in the cage with someone 13 years his junior would probably not be too enticing to the consensus #1 fighter in the world. Silva is a fighter, but he’s no fool that would go in there with someone as tall and big as Jones.
With Jones fighting at 205 lbs at the age of 24, one has to believe that his body still has some filling out to do. He already cuts weight to get to 205, so it is apparent that given his domination of the division and his body structure, he will eventually make the move to heavyweight. Silva’s lean body barely makes it to light heavyweight. The size, age and strength disparity would be too much for Silva to deal with and Jones could put his wrestling to work and dominate Silva for five rounds. Of course, Anderson Silva’s fluid striking could present problems for Jones as well.
Either way, there’s little chance that these two will step into the cage together unless UFC president Dana White sees it as a megafight that could trump Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. But as of right now, it’s not in the cards.
