Has Brian McKnight Lost His Mind?
Ahh, Brian McKnight. The “Back At One” singer who crooned his way into many a heart all through the 90s, and made more guest appearances on urban sitcoms than… almost anyone.
His voice puts ladies at ease from miles around and brings them to their feet at concerts to this day.
However, ladies, his latest may make you put your panties back on. In case you haven’t heard already, McKnight is getting ready to release an “adult mixtape.” Adult as in adult films. He’s basically about to release a good bit of material about explicit sex, and this guy is pulling no punches. We’ll let him take it from here.
All right, let’s say it in unison. 1, 2, 3…
“Aww hell naw!”
First of all, did he really just say that you “should’ve brought it to me first?” That’s pretty gutsy in and of itself.
The name of the song, as you now know, is “If You’re Ready To Learn.” This is basically a R. Kelly-esque “Seems Like You’re Ready” romp of a record, and it certainly sounds like he’s talking to a much younger woman. The grown and sexy don’t need to be shown or taught anything. While 42 is not old, it is old enough for a lack of subtlety and charm to go from being considered masculine and aggressive to old and creepy.
The singer, who seemed sincere enough in the video above as he talked about fans being slightly uncomfortable with his new direction, now says he was just joking around. We don’t believe him It certainly seems somewhat logical, as the author thought this was a joke when he first saw the clip.
“The song … was really for my 40,000 followers, because they’re the ones who have been there with me everyday,” McKnight said. “Those people are the ones who have seen me on the road to know that I have a sense of humor. I try to be as funny as I possibly can. When I put it up, it was really just for those people. Lo and behold, all hell has broken loose. … If I’d known this would’ve happened, I probably wouldn’t have done it, but here we are.”
“If You’re Ready to Learn” is “a parody,” McKnight added. “I’m having fun, because basically, I have nothing else to do. I’m at home, I have a studio, I’m a professional songwriter, I can write and sing anything, and here’s a little fun to share with you, and look what happened.” – CNN
First of all, if it is a joke, LAUGH! Make it funny. He has tried to compare it to Justin Timberlake‘s “D*ck In A Box,” which was an obvious parody. No dice. You are in a studio by yourself, singing into the camera.
Looks like the joke is on him this time. However, his Twitter account suggests that this was more than a mere joke:
So, what have we learned today?
It seems we’ve learned that a mid-life crisis, ladies and gentlemen, is quite the beast.
Let this be an example of why it’s best to do what we’re good at and leave the rest to someone else.
