The film, which stars Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson, took the title from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 as having the biggest opening in Hollywood history! According to US Weekly:
“Earning $18.7 million in midnight screenings alone Friday, The Avengers raked in far more than its Marvel movie predecessors: The Avengers: Iron Man ($99 million), Iron Man 2 ($198 million), Thor ($66 million) and Captain America ($65 million).
‘I’m running low on double takes,’ Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president for distribution, told The New York Times on Sunday. ‘As the numbers came in, we kept thinking, ‘Can these numbers possibly be right?’”
