A Basketball Wives Movie Is Coming To Theaters
Basketball Wives is headed to a theater near you. Shaunie O’Neal, the star and current producer of the hit VH1 reality series, has partnered up with Tracey Edmonds, Jumping The Broom‘s writer/producer, to create a major motion picture for Fox Searchlight, according to Variety. Penned by Jumping The Broom co-writer Elizabeth Hunter, the film is said to be loosely based on Shaunie, the ex-wife of Shaquille O’Neal and her friends and centers around a woman who follows her boyfriend to Miami after he is drafted to the NBA. What follows for the young girl thrust into the high stakes sports world is probably similar to the friendships and straight antics seen weekly on VH1.
“The beauty of a feature film is that we’ll have the ability to dig much deeper into the stories and characters that come from this very colorful world,” Edmonds told Variety, “and create a very juicy action packed narrative.”
Despite rumors to the contrary, none of the current stars of the series, including Evelyn Lozado, Jennifer Williams or Royce Reed, are set to appear in the film. “It’s fictional,” Shaunie told Vibe. “It’s a movie, so it has nothing… I see people on Twitter saying, ‘Oh god, you guys gon’ take that and turn it into a movie?’ You don’t take a reality show and make it a movie. At least, I wouldn’t. It’s not a quote, unquote ‘Basketball Wives movie.’ Even though it has to do with basketball life, it’s not actually taking Basketball Wives from TV and making it a movie. And it’s not about women sitting around arguing or lunching all the time. It’s an actual story.”
So who will star in the film? “We haven’t casted yet, but I wouldn’t call it a black woman’s story. It’s going to be a multiracial cast,” Shaunie revealed. “Of course, there will be black women ’cause most of the NBA seems to be. But, it is going to be multiracial.”
