First Trailer For Gangster Squad Starring Ryan Gosling
The first trailer for the star-studded Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, arrived last week- and so far, this film definitely seems like it will live up to expectations:
Director Ruben Fleischer only has two feature films under his belt, and they are both comedies, so it was a bit of a surprise that this project was able to land such high production values and A-list names. But Fleischer’s debut Zombieland was a surprise critical and commercial hit; and like the (less critically loved) 30 Minutes Or Less, the comedy incorporates a lot of well-choreographed action and surprisingly graphic violence. Perhaps it’s this evidence that helped Fleischer land Gosling and Stone, in addition to Josh Brolin, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and current Hollywood Lazarus man Nick Nolte.
As mobster Mickey Cohen, Sean Penn looks to have all the hallmarks of an Oscar-nominated role: based on a historical figure, high-ranking in society, strong element of physicality (if those boxing scenes are any indication), and psychologically tormented and ill (if we can assume a mob boss who calls himself God is a bit of a sociopath). It all hearkens back to his Academy Award-winning performance in Mystic River- though it’s a far cry from his equally award-winning performance as Harvey Milk!
What do you think? Will you be seeing Gangster Squad?
