Jay Pharoah’s Spoof Of ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith On “Saturday Night Live” Was Amazing
Unfortunately, the spoof that Jay Pharaoh did of Stephen A. Smith on Saturday Night Live over the weekend didn’t end up on the live show on Saturday night. Another segment ran a little bit too long, so Pharoah’s spot-on impersonation of “Screamin’ A”—a nickname that more than a few sports fans have given to Smith—had to be cut for time. However, it’s 2012 and a little thing called “the Internet” exists (we suggest go Google it if you’ve never heard of it—it’s pretty great) so we still got to see the spoof that Pharoah put together. And, holy $^%&, was it amazing! In the clip, Pharoah dresses like Smith, talks like Smith, yells like Smith, tell stories like Smith, and does such a good job that Smith himself said that he was flattered by the spoof when he was asked about it several times yesterday on a number of ESPN shows. He also tweeted about it shortly after he found out that the clip existed and said what an honor it was to be a part of SNL history now. “Saturday Night Live spoofed me last night,” he said. “And I got to admit: It was damn HILARIOUS! Loved it! Hysterical!!!” As someone who’s been following Smith for years now, it was great to see him get the SNL treatment. He’s been doing his “act” (he likes to yell a lot!) for quite some time now, so I’m glad SNL finally noticed it and found someone as talented as Pharoah to spoof him. But, there’s still one more Stephen A.-related skit that they didn’t pull off yet—one featuring him and his ESPN First Take cohort, Skip Bayless. What do you say, guys? Maybe next weekend? Ha! After all the hype that this clip generated, it might just be worth trying to pull it off. Watch the clip below:
