MTV2 Gets It Right With Hip Hop Squares
New MTV2 game show Hip Hop Squares made its debut late last night and to the relief of rap fans across the country, it was a great look for the music and the culture.
Based on Hollywood Squares, a show in which two contestants play tic-tac-toe to win cash and prizes that ran for 25 seasons from 1965 till 1994, this new iteration of the concept sees hip-hop’s most charismatic personalities (Ghostface Killah, Machine Gun Kelly, DJ Khaled and more) hold court in each square while offering their own personalized (and often bluffed) answers to the contestants’ questions. Hosted by HOT97 radio talent Peter Rosenberg, a renown hip-hop head whose sarcastic sensibilities and natural timing are perfect for the gig, Hip Hop Squares looks set to be another hit for MTV2, following on from their recent success with original programs like Guy Code.
Be sure to tune into Hip Hop Squares, featuring a mix of mainstays and new stars each week, Tuesday nights at 11pm ET on MTV2.
