John Legend Disses Britney Spears & Demi Lovato: ‘They Aren’t Really Singers’

They might all be serving as judges on reality TV singing competitions, but it seems the real competition is happening off the stage.

On the red carpet after a party thrown by Entertainment Weekly and ABC, John Legend, Robin Thicke, and Kelly Clarkson stopped to do interviews regarding their new show Duets. And, while Robin and Kelly kept it pretty positive, John wasn’t scared to throw some shade to shows like American Idol and, more specifically, X-Factor. The Simon Cowell-commanded TV series recently announced the addition of pop divas Britney Spears and Demi Lovato and John apparently isn’t impressed.

“You know, it’s interesting. It should be very interesting. I don’t have much to say,” Legend told E! “It’s interesting when people you know who are judging singing competitions when they aren’t really singers. It’s interesting.”

Ouch! Despite his harsh delivery, Legend does have a point. She may be an amazing entertainer, but Spears has never been praised for her singing ability. And, at just 19, Lovato’s career has barely begun. Does she really have the right to judge?

Still, Kelly—the first-ever winner of American Idol—did her best to keep things classy when asked about Brit Brit and Demi Lo. “I’m excited for both of them,” Clarkson gushed. “I’m a big fan of both of them. Both of those girls are super sweet. I think it’s fun for them, too, to just be more out in the public eye again. I think those two are two you really want to root for and you really want them to succeed, so I think that’s exciting. I think that show really needs it. I don’t think everybody latched onto that show like they thought they would.”

Check out the video below. Who do you agree with: John or Kelly?
