Zombie Apocalypse: Are You Ready? Know The Rules.
News of the gruesome face-eating assailant in Miami has everyone asking: is this the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse?
Reports now state that the attacker, 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, may have been under the influence of the drug known as “bath salts” when he was discovered along the MacArthur Causeway, naked and chewing on the face of an unidentified victim. Police shot Eugene dead after he ignored calls to stop.
Science fiction has never been entirely clear on what exactly would cause the Zombie Apocalypse. In every recent generation, it seems to have encapsulated our worst fears, especially of our own human hubris. Old myths of the dead coming back to life posited that they had unfinished business, or that with all the sin in the world, Hell was simply full. In George Romeo‘s classic Night of the Living Dead, made in the age of nuclear anxiety in 1968, the cause was thought to be radiation from a space probe returning to Earth. More recent books and films (I Am Legend, 28 Days Later) have often revolved around biological causes, including man-made viruses or attempts at genetic experimentation.
So why not bath salts?
Just in case this is the beginning of the end, now is a good time to review the basic principles of Zombie Defense, as laid down by Max Brooks in The Zombie Survival Guide:
1. Organize before they rise!2. They feel no fear, why should you?3. Use your head: cut off theirs.4. Blades don’t need reloading.5. Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.6. Get up the staircase, then destroy it.7. Get out of the car, get onto the bike.8. Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!9. No place is safe, only safer.10. The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.[via GoodReads]
