Why Is Nas Defending Gwyneth Paltrow’s Use Of The “N” Word?

Nas once said he was taking “power [away] from the word” by deciding to call one of his albums N*gger and now he’s going as far as defending a famous white celebrity’s use of it.

“I would slap the shit out of somebody for Gwyneth Paltrow,” Nas recently told CBS Local News when asked about the actress’s controversial “n” word tweet. “She’s the homie, she’s cool. Gwyneth gets a pass. Real people get a pass. We know what this shit is. We don’t interrupt Italians when they say ‘Wop’ to each other. They gonna punch you in the mouth if you interrupt that. Don’t interrupt us. We pick and choose.

“Some might not feel the same way,” he added. “Some of us will get angrier about it than others; but some people get a pass. The people that I know who are cool and real n*ggas, Gwyneth Paltrow is a real n*gga, that’s my homie. That’s how I’m on it. Some people get a pass.”

As XXL reports, the controversy began when Paltrow tweeted, “Ni**as in Paris for real @MrTeriusNash (the dream) tyty, beehigh” while on-stage at Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne concert in Paris, referring to the artist The-Dream, Jay’s best friend Ty Ty and his cousin B-High. After fellow Twitter users instantly picked up her faux pas, she attempted to clean it up by tweeting, “Hold up. It’s the title of the song!”

While The-Dream, Russell Simmons and now Nas have all come to Paltrow’s defense (some would say a little too hastily) their fellow hip-hop peer Q-Tip had something very different to say.

“Listen Rush Simmons, Touré, and all Black folk who are sympathist to this gwen paltrow n***a thing,” he tweeted. “She may not have meant harm, sure it was in the heat of the moment but that fact that she showed not 1 IOTA of an apologetic tone, given the historical weight of that word is not responsible of G Paltrow’s part.”

What are your thoughts on Gwyneth’s flippant use of the word?
