Kim Kardashian Talks To Oprah About How Her Sex Tape Helped Her Career
The biggest complaint that most people have about Kim Kardashian is that she has no “talent.” Despite the fact that she runs a freakin’ empire at this point in her career, complete with a TV show, a clothing company, a host of endorsements, and a bunch of other money-making enterprises, Kim K’s harshest critics still point out that the only reason she has all of her fame and fortune right now is because she once starred in a sex tape with her ex-boyfriend Ray J. And, they say that without that sex tape, she’d still be little more than “Paris Hilton‘s BFF.” So, during her family’s interview with Oprah on Oprah’s Next Chapter yesterday, Kim addresses the sex tape head on.
“Would you be where you are had there not been a sex tape?” Oprah asked her, very pointedly.
“You know, I think that’s how I was definitely introduced to the world,” Kim replied. “It was a negative way, so I really felt like I really had to work ten times harder to get people to see the real me.”
Kim also shot down the rumors that she’d released the tape herself in conjunction with Vivid Entertainment and revealed that she worried about “humiliating the family” when the tape dropped. Her mother Kris Jenner chimed in, too, to talk about the nightmare that accompanied the release of the sex tape. “No mother ever wants to hear something like that,” she said. “I could tell she was in a lot of pain.”
And then, Kim did a funny thing. She said that, despite all the pain it caused her, she’s learned to embrace the sex tape. And, really, why wouldn’t she? After all, the sex tape helped get her name out there, but that was only the first step towards her becoming the household name that she is today. For most people, the sex tape would have defined them for the rest of their lives. But, Kim used it to launch her career. Now, when we hear the name “Kim Kardashian,” we don’t automatically think “sex tape.” We think about her reality show. We think about her high-profile relationships. We think of a girl who turned a huge mistake into a paycheck. And, whether you want to admit it or not, that took talent.
