Should Deron Williams Sign With The Brooklyn Nets Or The Dallas Mavericks?

Sometime over the course of the next week, Deron Williams has a very big decision to make. He needs to decide whether he’d like to sign a huge contract with the Brooklyn Nets next season and hope (and pray!) that they are able to land Dwight Howard and instantly turn themselves into a title contender or take a deal for a little less with the Dallas Mavericks and immediately turn Mark Cuban‘s crew into an NBA title contender again. So, which should he choose? Let’s take a look at the facts.

Nets PROS: If D-Will signs with the Nets, he instantly becomes their franchise player. Even if they do trade for Howard, this becomes his team. With the Nets moving to Brooklyn next season, that’s important because he’ll technically be the first franchise player for a team that’s starting over again. Therefore, he’ll be included in Chapter 1 of the Brooklyn Nets history book forever.

Nets CONS: If the Nets don’t find a way to land Howard—or some other top-notch NBA star—they’re going to be bad, even very bad, for the next few years. They really mortgaged the franchise when they traded for Williams in the first place. So, if they’re not able to add at least one other piece to the mix, D-Will will end up on a bad team for the next five years. Oh, and in case you forgot: The Nets are also in the same conference as the Miami Heat. So, yeah…

Mavericks PROS: The Mavs are just one year removed from the NBA Finals. They also have a ton of talent that Williams would have at his disposal. Mark Cuban takes good care of his players. Dirk Nowitzki is still at the prime of his career. Williams has family in the Dallas area. And, the list goes on and on and on…

Mavericks CONS: While Williams would be first franchise player ever for the BK Nets, the Mavs wouldn’t technically be “his” team. They belong to Nowitzki until he retires, which won’t be anytime soon. Also, there’d be more pressure on Williams to succeed right away in Dallas. That team would be built to contend immediately and Williams would be put into a situation that he hasn’t been in since he played in college.

So, what should Williams do? Well, like we said, it’s his decision to make. But, not since the LeBron JamesDecision” have we been so interested to see what one player does. So, what’s it gonna be, D-Will? We’ll be waiting.
