The music industry is buzzing today after Odd Future member Frank Ocean revealed on his blog that he was once in love with a man. Rumors began to swirl about the R&B singer’s sexuality after an article on This Is Max claimed that Frank sings about “being in love and there are quite obvious words used like ‘him’ and not ‘her’” on his latest project, Channel Orange. Seeking to clarify things, the R&B singer took to his blog and admitted that his former love was a man. He wrote:

“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopelesst….It’s December 27, 2011….I wanted to create worlds that were rosier than mine…Before writing this I’d told some people my story…I feel like a free man.”

Frank said that the blog “was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round..i figured it’d be good to clarify.”

The news of Frank’s sexual orientation comes on the heels of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper‘s confirmation of the long-swirling rumors that he’s gay. Since Frank posted his blog, Odd Future leader, Tyler, the Creator, and others in the industry, including Russell Simmons, have come out in support of Frank. Whether you agree with his lifestyle or not, you have to admire and respect his courage.
