Andre 3000′s Jimi Hendrix Biopic Won’t Use Hendrix Music

Producers of the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000) of Outkast announced the soundtrack for the film recently, and it’s missing a surprising element: Jimi Hendrix songs. But according to the Huffington Post, the producers claim that this is all part of their master plan.

They never asked for the rights in the first place. According to producer Sean Mckittrick, “All Is By My Side”, which is currently being shot in Dublin and directed by John Ridley, was always supposed to be set in London between 1966-1967, before the release of Are You Experienced, the album that launched Hendrix to rock and roll stardom. “This is the story of being discovered as a backup musician and how he went to London and became Jimi Hendrix,” McKittrick told Rolling Stone.

(Sure, guys, but I think Hendrix had probably written and performed a few of his own songs before he started recording!)

The film has never received approval from the Hendrix estate, creating skepticism from the start. The song list, however, does sound pretty sweet. Rolling Stone writes:

Audiences will see Benjamin singing ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ (which Hendrix famously performed in a London club with members of the Beatles in the audience), ‘Wild Thing,’ ‘Hound Dog,’ Muddy Waters’ ‘Mannish Boy’ and Elmore James’ ‘Bleeding Heart,’ plus two songs, ‘Future Trip’ and ‘Driving South,’ that Hendrix played as a backup musician for Curtis Knight and the Squires.

Seriously, how can they afford The Beatles, and not manage to get Hendrix tunes?! I’ll reserve judgement until the film actually comes out; I just worry it will be like the unlicensed Janis Joplin biopic on 30 Rock, where Jenna had to perform bizarre song variations as “Janet Joppler.”

What do you think? Will they still pull off the biopic?
