What If Chael Sonnen Beats Anderson Silva?

Chael Sonnen has talked himself into one of the biggest fights in UFC history and has drawn the ire of the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter. After pushing Anderson Silva to the brink of defeat in their first fight 2 years ago, the trash talking Sonnen finds himself days away from a second showdown with “The Spider.” However, this rematch is different as Silva is incensed to obliterate, maim, and demolish his foe thanks to Sonnen’s wild barbs that have gone on for two years. Sonnen has dissed Silva, his country, his wife, and his countrymen in an effort to get him back into the cage for a rematch. Well, it worked. But did Sonnen bite off more than he could chew?

Maybe.

But what if Sonnen’s wild antics have gotten Silva so out of character that he’s vunerable to being upended by a focused wrestler that has already proven once that he has Silva’s number. Hell, what if Sonnen wins? Can you imagine how big it would be for the sport? It’s no secret that Sonnen sells a fight like no other, but should he find a way to defeat Silva, can you imagine how epic his post fight speech would be?

But wait, it gets better.

Should Sonnen win, a third fight would certainly be in order and Dana White can begin counting the dollar signs as the hype would go through the roof. Not to mention that this would be one of those moments where the UFC stretches beyond it’s core fan base and draws an audience of viewers that may have never cared about mixed martial arts. If Sonnen were the champ, he’d carry the title well and appearences on evening talk shows would be a must. He has quotables for days and people would tune in just to hear him speak.

The more you think about it, the better it would be for the entire sport if Chael Sonnen defeats Anderson Silva on July 7th at UFC 148.

But the likelihood of it is slim to none as this is Anderson Silva we are talking about.
