New Music Video: Willow Smith Debuts “I Am Me”
Willow Smith may only be 11 years old, but she is already poised to sing about breaking free from the metaphorical shackles that have kept her down during her short time on earth.
”I’m me and that’s all I can be,” she coos on the hook. “Here’s my vulnerability. I’m free and you can’t stop me. I’m me and that’s all I can be.”
We’re not exactly sure what Willow has been a prisoner of since her A-list parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett have pretty much ensured that their daughter has had every advantage in life—which includes signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label—but the pint-sized teen is ready to “speak on” her oppression.
The four-minute video is quite adorable as the teen, dressed in an over-sized yellow polka dot button down, jeans, and a black bowler hat, takes in the city while tickling her electric keyboard. “Days pass, I’m tryin’ to find out who I really am,” she sings on the motivational track. “I’ve been lookin’. People don’t like the way I dress or where I’m at. I dye my hair and it’s not just vanity. Your validation is just not that important to me.”
