Nick Cannon Says American Idol ‘Can’t Afford’ Mariah Carey
Nick Cannon may know what it takes to get his lady love Mariah Carey laughing. But, one thing the America’s Got Talent judge won’t joke about is cold hard cash!
Ever since Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announced they would not be returning for the next season of American Idol, rumors have been swirling as to who could fill those famed judge seats that stars like Ellen Degeneres and Paula Abdul once called home. And while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and former Idol contestant Adam Lambert have been mentioned, no name has come up as frequently as Ms. Carey.
But when asked whether his wife would be sitting in one of those famous seats next to her old pal Randy Jackson, Cannon, 31, was quick to extinguish those thoughts. “I don’t know if they could afford a Mariah Carey, though,” Cannon told TMZ. “That’s a lot of money. I mean they gave J.Lo $20 million, they might have to double that.”
So would the 42-year-old diva ever take the gig? “I don’t know! I’m not her manager, I’m her husband,” he said. “I mean, you never know. It’s one of those things where she’s got an album coming out, so it’s promotion.”
