Is Michael Vick Right To Think The Philadelphia Eagles Could Start A “Dynasty” This Year?
Today is Sunday. And, we’ve got some good news for you: It’s one of the last Sundays you’ll have to live through without NFL football! That’s right. Although it may still seem like it’s a little bit early to start talking football, the truth is that NFL teams are starting to gear up for training camp right now. And, before long, they’ll be playing preseason games on Sundays again. No more shopping at the Home Depot all day or doing projects around the house on Sundays for you! So, get ‘em done now and let’s get this season started.
Now, with the start of football comes a lot of bold predictions. Most of those predictions will be made by NFL analysts and talking heads who don’t actually determine the outcome of games. But, one NFL superstar is stepping up and offering a bold prediction of his own. That superstar is Michael Vick. And, he’s making headlines right now for stepping up and saying that he thinks that his Philadelphia Eagles could start a dynasty this season. Yup, after all the slack his former teammate Vince Young caught for alluding to the Eagles as the “Dream Team” in 2011, he’s stepping out on a ledge and saying Philly could be the NFL’s next big dynasty.
“When I look at our football team and what we have on paper, I think about when I was growing up and the great San Francisco 49ers teams, the great Green Bay Packers teams, and the great Dallas Cowboys teams,” Vick said recently. “How they positioned themselves to compete and be one of the best teams out there. I think we have a chance to be that. I think we have a chance to develop a dynasty.”
Is he right? Not by a long shot. For starters, the Eagles have made just one—yes, one—Super Bowl in the last decade. Despite all of the success they’ve enjoyed during head coach Andy Reid‘s years in Philly, they’ve rarely gotten to the NFL’s big game, yet along won one. And, you also have to remember: This year’s Eagles won’t be all that different from last year’s Eagles team that went just 8-8. So, how can Vick truly believe that Philly is going to turn into a dynasty?
It’s nice to hear players speak with confidence. It’s also nice to know that Vick is thinking about ending his career in the City of Brotherly Love. But, a dynasty? It’s a little early to start talking about that. How about if Vick just: A) Stays healthy, B) Leads the Eagles to the NFL Playoffs, and C) Makes it to a Super Bowl? If he can do that—and he can somehow manage to luck up and win at least one Super Bowl—then we can start talking about a dynasty in Philly. Until then, Vick needs to keep his head in his playbook. Dynasties aren’t built overnight.
