Will Adrien Broner Be The Next Floyd Mayweather?

If you weren’t convinced before, Adrien Broner showed this weekend why he has the tools to become the next big thing in boxing. I’m not really talking about his 5th round TKO of Vicente Escobedo on Saturday night. That spectacular knockout was tainted by Broner’s inability to make weight. It was what Broner did before and after the fight that proved that he may be the next polarizing fighter that people love to hate. Kind of like that guy named Mayweather that rakes in boatloads of money while people consistently trash him on message boards and in conversation.

Broner is a remarkable talent and he knows it. The soon-to-be 23-year-old unbeaten fighter patterns his game after Floyd Mayweather. He utilizes the shoulder roll to give his foes little room to operate, but unlike Mayweather, Broner has massive punching power that has sent 20 of his 24 opponents down and out before the final bell. He may not be as nimble on his feet, but his devastating power and ability to rip combinations at will make him downright scary.

But there are a lot of fighters who are spectacular talents. What makes Broner different is his ability to sell himself. The flashy chains, the brushing of the hair, the trash talk, and the confidence that borders on arrogance have captivated audiences. Either you find his schtick humorous or you are sickened by it. Either way, you are captivated by Broner. Once he gets in the ring, you can’t help but see what he is going to do. Fortunately, he has been remarkable inside of the squared circle and his boasts have been supported by his fists.

Clearly, Broner realizes that there will be a void when Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao walk away and boxing is in need of a new star to take the sport into the mainstream. You can’t just be a great fighter, you have to be a great personality with a ton of charisma. Broner has that at a very young age. The problem is that he hasn’t really been tested yet. We’ve seen quite a few of boxing’s next big stars get hung out to dry just as they were supposedly taking their craft to the next level. Andre Berto, Victor Ortiz, Devon Alexander, Juan Manuel Lopez, and Amir Khan have all been chopped down. With Broner moving up to 135 lbs, a ton of dangerous fights can be set up. He already called out Brandon Rios and Juan Manuel Marquez, so let’s see how far the kid’s mouth and skills can take him.
