50 Cent Gets Boxing Promoter’s License; Exchanges Twitter Jabs With Oscar De La Hoya

50 Cent told us some time ago that he was going to get into the fight game. As Floyd Mayweather‘s right hand man, it only made sense. Mayweather addressed the possibility of Curtis Jackson becoming a boxing promoter back in April.

“50 cent is getting involved with fighters and the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said while citing that Curtis Jackson tried his hand at boxing as a young man in Southside Jamaica, Queens. “I went to his neighborhood. He was a rough and tough kid.”

“He’s going to be involved in the promotion side probably. We’re a team and he’s a part of Mayweather Promotions.”

Now, 50 Cent is officially a promoter and ready to make waves in the boxing world. Rumors of him signing both Andre Dirrell and Yuriorkis Gamboa have been bounced around the blogosphere as the G-Unit general looks to make a statement. But he may have already picked a fight with the Golden Boy himself, Oscar De La Hoya.

When De La Hoya heard about 50 acquiring his promoter’s license, the former champion turned promoter immediately took to Twitter to make a statement. “Everyone wanting to be a boxing promoter? Good luck. Easier said then done,” he tweeted. But he should have known that 50 Cent is just as confrontational away from the microphone as he is on it.

“Sweetheart, I’m surprised you would respond to me and Floyd starting [our] company the wayyou [sic] did,” 50 replied. “Now every body [sic] wants to be a promoter (?) Girl you better stop.”

50 Cent is using the leaked photos of De La Hoya in stockings and a wig as a reference point for his sarcasm. But it was his following tweet that may have raised the most eyebrows.

“I don’t gamble, floyd [sic] do, but I bet you won’t be promoting Floyd mayweather [sic] no more. TMT PROMOTIONS.”

De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has long assisted Mayweather with the promotion of his fights. But it now appears that 50 Cent and Mayweather may be opting to cut ties with Golden Boy and move on to be a full fledged promotion. Mayweather has never been too complimentary of De La Hoya, so the possibility that 50 Cent’s new promotion company could push out Golden Boy is a real possibility. However, Golden Boy has been one of the top promoting firms in all of boxing. It’s going to take a lot more than one fighter to change the game.

Stay tuned.
