Tim Tebow Continues To Make Headlines For All The Wrong Reasons Thanks To His Shirtless Training Camp Photos
I like Tim Tebow. I’m not as big a supporter as, say, ESPN First Take‘s Skip Bayless. But, if I had to choose between handing over the reins of my franchise to a mid-level quarterback with absolutely no star power (for instance, Kevin Kolb or Matt Flynn) or Tebow, I’d pick Tebow 10 out of 10 times. If nothing else, the guy is going to try to lead his football team to victory. And, that’s more than I can say for a lot of other quarterbacks around the league.
That being said, sometimes that means that Tebow makes headlines for all the wrong reasons. It’s one of the things you have to live with when you bring Tebow onto your football team. And, it’s exactly what the New York Jets are being forced to live with right now. Over the weekend, Tebow ran some drills during training camp without a shirt on and photographers snapped shirtless Tebow photos that quickly went viral on the Internet. Girls flocked to the photos to see Tebow’s bulging biceps and pecs. Guys flocked to them to say, “HA! What a clown. This guy sucks!” And, within a couple of hours, Tebow’s latest flicks were all over the Web with people making snarky remarks about them on Twitter. Like everything involving Tebow, it got blown way out of proportion and turned into something bigger than it should have been.
The problem with this? Although it helps bring more attention to the Jets (as if they really needed it), it also distracts people from what Tebow is trying to accomplish. He’s not out to win beauty pageants because of his good looks. He’s out to play quarterback for the Jets and to help them win. And, if he wants to do that, he needs to be more mindful of doing stuff like this. It’s obviously not a crime to take your shirt off at the end of football practice. But, he has to realize the kind of stir that something like this is going to cause and do everything he can to avoid it. Short of coming out and calling for Mark Sanchez‘s job over the weekend, there’s nothing else that he could have done to make more headlines than removing his shirt. Well, almost nothing.
Tebow could start making headlines by actually, you know, performing—and performing well—on the field. But, he hasn’t really done that yet with the Jets. If he wants to get guys like me to love him as a player, as opposed to just liking him, he needs to start making headlines for what he does there. Otherwise, he’s just going to continue to be an act for the rest of his NFL career—or until his act gets old.
So, next time it starts raining, keep your shirt on, Tim. Otherwise, you’re going to continue making headlines for all the wrong reasons. And, we don’t think that’s what you want to do…is it?
