Watch Gymnast Aly Raisman’s Parents Freak Out During Her Olympic Performance
The London Olympics may have gotten its first viral video in America (unless you count this Italian fencing celebration). Fans have been spellbound by Women’s Gymnastics, and were shocked when Aly Raisman qualified for the all-around, knocking out favorite Jordan Wieber. But now, Raisman’s parents are becoming internet celebrities of their own.
During Raisman’s performance on the uneven bars, NBC had a camera trained on Lynn and Ricky Raisman in the stands. (Their voices are so clear in the video, they may have been mic’d as well.) The results were… internet gold.
Mama Raisman is pure nerves, shifting back and forth in her seat, mumbling and shouting, while Dad just quietly nurses a heart attack before letting it all out at the end.
I think any parents (or anyone whoever had a parent cheer for them) can relate to this tense couple, even if we can only imagine what they are feeling for their daughter at that level of competition.
Many are already calling for Kristen Wiig to return to SNL, just to play Mrs. Raisman in the inevitable sketch adaptation of this scene
I think it’s very telling that while this video is everywhere, I can’t find a video of just the actual routine. But a split-screen of Raisman’s performance and her parent’s reactions is available here at NBC.
What are your favorite Olympic moments so far?
