The Nike Air Flight 89 Gets A London-Inspired Makeover For The Olympics

At this point, we’ve featured at least a dozen different sneakers inspired by the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Every single sneaker company out there has produced at least one, and most of the sneakers feature some sort of combination of the colors red, white, and blue. They all look very patriotic and they’re meant to invoke feelings of patriotism when you see them. However, we can’t help but wonder what you’re going to do with some of those sneakers once the Olympic Games are over. We’re all for showing off our country’s colors every now and then. But, we also don’t like to look like Benjamin Franklin‘s great-great-great-great-grandkids every time we leave the house.

It’s one of the reasons we’re glad Nike has taken a somewhat different approach to their “London” sneakers inspired for the Olympics. Take this new London-inspired Nike Air Flight 89, for example. It was inspired by London and Nike created it solely because of the Olympics. But, you’d probably never know that if we hadn’t just told you. It features a Dynamic Blue upper, Volt Swooshes, Fireberry laces, and some small hits of white and black throughout the sneaker. It doesn’t exactly scream, “GO USA!,” but it does have a place in Nike’s Olympic pack because of the inspiration that it draws from the city of London. So, you can wear this well after the Olympics are over without having to answer for it every time you go out in public.

If you want a pair, they’ll be available at select U.S. retailers beginning on Saturday for a pretty reasonable price of $95. You might get a lot of looks when you wear these—and a few questions from people who aren’t familiar with some of the more outlandish Nike colorways—but we can guarantee these are better than 90 percent of the other Olympic-themed sneakers that are out there right now. So, get off the couch, stop watching for the Olympics for a couple hours, and pick up your pair ASAP. Because, we you’re definitely not going to see another Olympic sneaker that looks like this.
