Guess Which MMA Fighter Nike Just Signed To An Endorsement Deal?
In the past, Nike hasn’t typically done business with MMA fighters. In fact, Anderson Silva is the first and only MMA fighter to ever get an endorsement deal with the Swoosh. Why? Well, your guess is as good as ours. But, if we had to guess, we’d say that Nike probably has steered clear of mixed martial arts because of the negative stigma that’s surrounded the sport for so many years. A lot of MMA fighters aren’t super marketable, either, so it’s not all that hard to see why Nike hasn’t wanted to get into bed with them. However, it appears that the negative stigma surrounding MMA and its fighters is being removed little by little because Nike just signed their second MMA fighter to a global endorsement deal.
So, who’d they decided to give a deal to? None other than Jon “Bones” Jones, who announced that Nike inked him to a global sponsorship deal through his Twitter account the other day. If you’re unfamiliar with Jones, check out this video that UFC released back in April just prior to UFC 145:
So, what does this deal mean for Jones? It means that he’ll have his own collection of Nike apparel and footwear soon. We’re not sure what it’ll look like yet and we’re not sure when Nike will release any of it. But, now that Jones is officially signed to a deal, we don’t expect Nike to drag their feet for too long. We also don’t expect Jones to be the last UFC fighter with a deal. With MMA becoming bigger and bigger every year, we’d expect to see more MMA fighters signed to Nike—and to other sneaker companies, for that matter—in the coming months and years. Keep an eye out for it. And, keep an eye out for Jones’ Nike gear, too. It’s coming soon to a Nike retailer near you.
