Do You Think This Nike “Gold Digging” T-Shirt Is Sexist?
Over the course of the last year or so, Nike has released a lineup of T-shirts that has been risqué, to say the least. Bearing slogans like “GET HIGH” and “KISS MY AIRS,” Nike has seemingly set out to make headlines with some of the slogans that they’ve chosen to put in big, block letters across the front of their T-shirts. But, one of those shirts has Nike making headlines right now—for all of the wrong reasons.
As you can see in the photo above, Nike created a women’s T-shirt that says “GOLD DIGGING” across the front of it in the weeks leading up to the 2012 Summer Olympics. When I first saw it, I thought, “Aw, isn’t that cute? That’s a pretty funny way to promote the Olympics.” But, in the same breath, I also thought, “Now, who is going to be the first person to get offended by that shirt?”
As it turns out, it didn’t take very long for Nike to catch heat for the “GOLD DIGGING” shirt. In the last week, a number of different publications and websites have come out and blasted Nike for the T-shirt and called it “sexist.” They’re calling for Nike to recall the shirts and asking why Nike didn’t choose to go with phrases like “GO FOR THE GOLD” or “GOOD AS GOLD” as opposed to a phrase that clearly conjures up thoughts of “gold diggers” or women who marry for money. They’re saying that Nike could have easily avoided any controversy by dropping this shirt from their collection, and they feel as though the shirt didn’t properly promote the Olympic spirit.
So, is this T-shirt really sexist—or are people just making too big of a deal out of it? I wasn’t offended by it. But, then again, I’m not a woman. So, I’d like to open the question up for discussion. I want to know if you would wear it (if you’re a young lady) or if you’d ever buy it for your girlfriend, sister, or daughter. Nike says they didn’t mean any harm. But, should they have thought twice before producing this T-shirt? Sound off below.
