Ron Paul Delegates Furious After Disqualification At GOP Convention
Twenty Maine delegates supporting Rep. Ron Paul erupted in anger on Tuesday after they were denied credentials by the Republican National Committee. The episode has highlighted and aggravated the divide between the party and its libertarian wing.
After the decision was finalized, the delegates (sporting white Ron Paul baseball caps) broke into a chant of “Seat us now,” before walking out of the convention.
Paul supporters say the decision was motivated by politics, and they are being punished for mounting a challenge against Mitt Romney. The committee on credentials, however, cited Maine’s state convention as chaotic and highly irregular, and refused to certify the delegates. As a compromise, they seated ten Romney delegates and ten Paul delegates.
Paul did not win a single primary by popular vote, but his supporters flooded state conventions to become delegates to the national convention.
The issues has strained relations within the party. Maine Gov. Paul LePage skipped the convention over the row.
