Sorry Madden, But NBA 2K Is Still The Best Sports Game On The Market

On Tuesday, Madden NFL 13 hit shelves and skeptics of the only football franchise with an NFL license were pleased to see that the game took a step in the right direction. New physics, new commentary team, new presentation and a new “Connected Careers” mode where sports and role playing games intersect have really filled the lungs of the struggling series with new life. I’ve had my review copy for two weeks and I still enjoy playing it whereas I grew tired of previous installments and quickly drifted back to MLB The Show or the NCAA franchise. That certainly means a lot.

However, it’s no coincidence that 2K Sports dropped a drool inducing trailer for NBA 2K13 around the same time. For all the great strides Madden has made this year, NBA 2K has still put together the best set of yearly upgrades that a sports franchise has ever seen. First it was Jordan, then it was Magic, Bird, Nique, Malone, and a bunch of other legends. This year it’s about Jay-Z, the Dream Team, and making the All Star game its very own special experience and not a game that you’d rather skip just so you can get back to the games that matter in your season.

The trailer below gives a glimpse into what will be featured in this year’s installment and I’ve already subconsciously shoved Madden aside as I count down the days until NBA 2K is back. Among the highlights are both the rising stars and all-star games, three point shootout, and a amazing looking dunk contest that does a great job bringing back the nostalgia as legendary athletes including Spud Webb, Shawn Kemp, and Clyde Drexler can be seen punching it in. And Blake Griffin windmilling over a car? Ridiculous.

October 2nd can’t come soon enough.
