Yahoo Journalist Fired After Hurricane Isaac “Black People Drowning” Remark

Yahoo News Washington Bureau chief David Chalian has been given the axe from his position after being caught on a live microphone delivering an inappropriate comment.

In the video below, you can hear Chailian and the other commentators on Yahoo News discussing Hurricane Isaac heading towards the US Gulf Coast. Obviously unaware that the microphones were live, the conversation continued as Mitt Romney and his wife were walking on screen. A voice can be heard saying, “They’re not concerned at all;” the others laugh. And then Chalian made the error that cost him his job:

“They are happy to have a party with black people drowning.”

Ouch.

Chalian immediately went into damage control stating that he was “profoundly sorry” on his Facebook page for making the inapproriate joke. “I was commenting on the challenge of staging a convention during a hurricane and about campaign optics,” he said. But the damage was done and Chalian was given his walking papers.

A Yahoo spokeswoman told the Associated Press: “He has been terminated effective immediately.”

I wonder if anyone will hire him after this.
