Michael Jordan is going to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Yes, again. He was so good on the basketball court that the Hall of Fame asked him to attend two Enshrinement Ceremonies!

Okay, okay, so technically that isn’t true. You can only be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame once as a player, no matter how good you were. But, MJ will still be in attendance at the 2012 Enshrinement Ceremony next Friday to help induct Nike Chairman and Co-Founder Phil Knight into the exclusive Hall of Fame club. He’ll also be joined by former Georgetown head coach John Thompson at the Hall of Fame induction, who has been a close friend of Knight for years now and has been on the Nike board since 1991.

Does Phil Knight really deserve a place in the Hall of Fame, though? And, more importantly, does he deserve the greatest basketball player of all-time to be there to induct him into the Hall of Fame? In a word, yes. Technically, Knight is being inducted as a “contributor to the game of basketball,” but isn’t he really so much more than that? Years ago, sneakers weren’t a central part of the NBA. But, today, Nike has turned basketball sneakers into a multibillion-dollar business. Kids dream just as hard about getting a sneaker contract as they do an NBA contract. And, you can’t attend an NBA game—or, hell, any basketball game—without spending at least a few minutes of your time checking out the kicks on the court.

So, with that in mind, Knight definitely deserves a place in the Hall. And, he deserves to have MJ there to induct him into the Hall because of everything he did to help put Nike on the global map. Make sure you stay tuned for video from Knight’s induction and, of course, plenty of photos of MJ at the ceremony. If things turn out anything like MJ’s first trip there in 2009 (remember his speech?!), there should be plenty of stories to come out of it.
